Denis Poor Building Services

A well-established building design and construction company specialising in individual residential and commercial projects throughout the South-West of Western Australia.

Denis Poor has over 40 years’ experience in the architectural field, working with award-winning architects, Overman & Zuideveld,  as well as 23 years as a Registered Builder.

In past years, Denis has also worked in collaboration with John Klein as a boutique builder in Perth, designing and building up-market residences throughout the Perth metropolitan area.

In 1995, Denis re-located to Yallingup and established himself with Overman & Zuideveld Architects.  This led to him diversifying into his own operations as a successful designer and builder in the South-West area.  Consequently, he expanded his operations that included project-managing large accommodation resorts in Busselton and Dunsborough, together with award-winning residences, wineries and commercial complexes.

Denis established his building services company in 2004 to incorporate his vast experience and skills in the building and architectural fields, culminating in receiving four awards in the 2010 HIA-NAB South-West Housing Awards, which included the Winner of the South-West Home of the Year, followed by the HIA-NAB WA Country Home of the Year, 2010 – State Award, plus three Awards in the 2013 HIA South West Housing Awards.  Denis also was the Winner of the WA Framed Home of the Year Award in the 2013 HIA WA Housing Awards.  (See Awards page for further details.)

Passive design is a term given to the design of homes that have little, if any, need for artificial cooling and heating. Simple things, like the orientation of the home to take advantage of all available sunlight and natural ventilation with the selection of energy efficient windows and doors, will all make the difference.Sheoak Drive 3

With the use of sound design principles, which Denis has gained in his years in architecture, a home will take advantage of the natural climate conditions to maintain thermal comfort. These principles therefor result in improved energy efficiency and, in doing so, decrease energy costs to heat and cool the home, The ultimate outcome thus minimises greenhouse gas emissions related to artificial heating and cooling systems.

In 2012, Denis undertook a series of seminars conducted by the HIA Western Australia branch to qualify as a Designer and Builder by obtaining the HIA GreenSmart Professional accreditation which incorporates sound design principles together with the environmental awareness and skills for a more sustainable living residential design and construction of homes.

Denis is prepared to discuss important aspects of ‘sustainable living’ in the design of any project. Sheoak Drive, Yallingup (pictured at the top of the website and to the right here) is one example of these principles.
